The name of this famous resort comes from the association of « Croix de Vie » (Cross of life) which is the name of the fishing port and « Saint Gilles » which is situated on the left hand side of the mouth of the river Vie.
The city is built around the estuary of the river Vie which is quite a geographical curiosity. The river is stopped by a bed of sand dunes and then by headlands called "Corniche de Vendée" which causes several branches in the river before meandering towards the Atlantic Ocean.
The city is famous for its fishing history and Maritime heritage.
Today there are 66 boats fishing blue fish such as sardine, mackerel and scads. Fishermen practice several kinds of fishing: with trawls, nets, traps, fishing lines and deep sea.
